Portland Community Wind Band

Our goal is to provide an opportunity for adults to enjoy a musical experience which includes performances throughout the school year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the PCWB hold auditions for open positions?

As a group, we have determined that we like to play intermediate and advanced music. It keeps us musically challenged and we enjoy it. In order to sound our best, collectively, we have found it necessary to require minimum skill levels for our musicians.

What can a new member expect for an audition?

A potential new member is invited to sit in on a rehearsal. This is to get a feel for the group and decide if it is a fit for them. Then, the potential new member will schedule an audition time with the director, based on both of their schedules. The audition will consist of a prepared piece by the musician, a selection of major scales (selected by the director), and a sightreading piece, most likely in 6/8.

When/where does the PCWB rehearse?

We rehearse Wednesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Beaumont Middle School band room. Beaumont Middle School is located at 4043 NE Fremont St. The room is open at 6:30 for percussion set-up and personal warm-up time. Beaumont has plenty of parking just outside the band room, which is in the '70s style modular building behind the school. Entry to the parking lot is off Bryce St. just north of Fremont.

Is there a fee for participation?

Yes, there is a small fee for participation so we have a little money to buy music, pay guest conductors, pay printing costs and maybe rental fees for specialty equipment or a hall. The fee is $75.00 for the whole season, September to June.

Where does the band perform?

Concert locations vary. Often, we perform in conjunction with a local high school group to share audience and help promote music in the high schools. Sometimes we perform in a Portland city park (early summer).

Are band members expected to purchase a uniform?

Performance attire is all black, not necessarily tuxedo/formal wear, but not black shorts either. Long (below the knee) skirts or dresses for women who wear them (pants are fine) tops with sleeves, no spaghetti straps or tanks, please. Black shoes and socks. All black is pretty easy for most people to put together, looks great on stage, and creates a good atmosphere for the performance. As for our concerts in the park, special attire announcements are made at rehearsals. This may include a special "band shirt" or may include any red/white/blue suitable attire.

Is personal band member information shared?

Band members may use the addresses on the mailing list for band business only, such as carpooling and music sharing.
